disproving an oft cited idiom

I've a bit of a fly problem- apparently over watered house plants are fruit fly heaven. I looked to the internet for advice and had mediocre success with my several DIY fly traps, all variations on a shallow plate filled with cider vinegar.
but wait.
upon waking I had a realization : isn't the saying YOU WILL CATCH MORE FLIES WITH HONEY THAN VINEGAR?
well, i tried that too and apparently it should more accurately read:

"you will catch more flies by filling a small Tupperware with cider vinegar, stirring in some dish soap to break surface tension, wrapping it in plastic wrap, poking it with multiple holes and leaving it on your stove over nite to warm up than with honey"

fly massacre
